What do you do when you already own a 2000 acre vineyard estate in the rolling foothills of the Sierra Pintada Mountains at the foot of the snow capped Andes? Well if you are serial entrepreneur Scott Mathis you buy an an old villa in the best part of Buenos Aires, and then spend four years, and a fortune turning it into the most exclusive, discreet and sophisticated boutique hotel in town. Then you impress the locals, who invite their international friends (that's how we we found out about it) and before you know it you have the "must stay" hotel in all of South America.
Located in the heart of Recoleta, the mansion is surrounded by embassies, smart homes and many of Buenos Aires' best restaurants. Arriving here is more like coming home to a very smart townhouse in Belgravia or the Upper East Side, and the mood continues on the inside once you have been introduced to your personal butler, shown to your suite, and enjoyed your arrival massage at the mansion's spa.
With only ten suites, you can't pick a bad one, especially as even the smallest is more than 600 square feet. All of them are decorated in a rich yet comfortable style, and this really is a place where you look forward to coming home, taking your shoes off and curling up on the sofa. Bathrooms are large and fabulous. They have 80-jet showers and bathtubs with underwater speakers in the largest suites. Nothing has been forgotten, and it's all done with the utmost taste and attention to detail.
Downstairs, movers and shakers from Argentina's elite gather at Frank's Cognac Bar for business lunches and pre-dinner cocktails served by excellent Bartender Natalie Escudero. At Chez Nous, the mansion's signature restaurant, Chef Antonio Soriano is impressing foodies with his French inspired take on traditional Argentinian regional dishes. Even if you aren't staying here, we highly recommend you visit for lunch or dinner.
Until now the best hotel in town was without doubt the Park Hyatt, and it still is if you are looking for a classy city hotel with a contemporary twist and excellent service. If however, you prefer your luxury to be served in a highly personalized and almost private home setting, then we can't think of a better place to stay than here.
What a shame there's only one Algodon Mansion and it's so far away…
