Argentina’s President, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, declared wine as the drink most related to the country’s identity and culture.

On 24th November, in Museo del Bicentenario (Bicentennial Museum) and with the presence of different representatives of the industry, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner signed the decree declaring wine as the national drink. She pointed out the identity and cultural strength of the winemaking activity in Argentina. She said that not only the economic activity is promoted but also the culture and welfare. Moreover, she announced her intention to declare mate as the national infusion.

The president reminded that Argentina is the fifth wine producer and the ninth exporter.

“We have achieved to organize all the effort and private investment by means of very strong and active policies. We got very good organization among the country, provinces and producers,” pointed out the president, who also referred to the extension of the winemaking areas, which used to be Mendoza and San Juan traditionally, and now Salta, La Rioja, Catamarca, Río Negro and Neuquén are also included.”

At the end of the event, the president also expressed her intention to declare mate as the national infusion, in order to keep on reinforcing cultural and economic activities as important as the mate production and consumption.
